Our Association held a meeting to protest government neglect and increasing crime in the Jane & Sheppard area on Saturday, November 4, 2006 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Despite the relatively early hour, and the cold morning weather, we had 1-200 people in attendance. The demonstration was documented in our photo album. Some of the chants included "STOP THE CRIME!", "IT'S A CRIME", "STOP THE NEGLECT!". Sadly, only a few days later, a major police operation confirmed our fears.
We note with escalating concern that right next to the 1900 Sheppard Ave W Redevelopment Project two schools were closed, and a major police presence, including armored vehicles and SWAT teams surrounded the area in a dragnet in an effort to capture two armed fugitives who threatened the police with a gun. The event was covered by City News, Toronto Sun and City Pulse and the 31 Division has issued a press release (PDF). We tried to capture the event in photos posted in our album, but we arrived after most of the police had left the scene. (We also tried to remove any personally identifiable photographs). In Toronto Sun's coverage of the event, by Rob Lamberti, Sgt. David Knowles is quoted as saying "It's quite alarming. We've done an extensive search of the area. We'll continue to search."
City News described the site as follows: "It was definitely an eerie sight - heavily armed police officers patrolling a Jane-Sheppard neighbourhood with high powered rifles drawn."
The 31 Division News Release reads:

This week Toronto Police report 13 crimes in the 31 division area which are all theft-related.  Among them are four robberies in the Jane & Sheppard community or roughly 30% of all crimes for this week in the area.  Police were called to Roseglen Cr & Frith Rd (near Jane & Sheppard) at 1:00am in the morning after a man reported that he had been forcefully beaten to the ground and attacked.  The victim was punched several times and after surrendering his cash the suspects fled south on Jane Street.

In addition, 31 Division police invite the public to a community barbecue  that will take place on Saturday May 12, 2007 between 11:00-3:00pm.

The full crime report including the four incidents at Jane & Sheppard is reproduced below.
