At the OMB hearing we learned that the Jane and Sheppard Library might close throughout the construction process that was expected to take approximately 1.5-2 years.  The closure of the library would mean less available library resources to the community including computer facilities, book requests, study space, community programs, leisure, browsing and would undermine literacy in the area.  In a ‘priority neighbourhood’ the effect of a library closing is far more adverse than in the average community.  The closing of Jane and Sheppard Library would be a major setback to the community.

This was among the major hot button issues our residents and members raised at the Jane and Sheppard Open House which took place on Thursday March 8, 2007.  The Toronto Public Library representatives fortunately stated that the library would no longer close throughout the duration of the expansion/relocation project with the exception of a few days for packing and transition into the new library.  The new Jane/Sheppard Branch is scheduled to double in size and should accommodate two additional computers with high speed internet access.

Public parking still remains a thorny issue for the expansion project.  An architect from Cannon Design brought forward exhibits of the site plan that displayed a total of 20 parking spaces for the library and apartment, two shy of what was stated at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB).  The amended zoning for the area requires 22 parking spaces and this is what the OMB approved.  The failure to provide at least 22 parking spots is a violation of the Official Plan, a document that promotes healthy planning to the City of Toronto.

Once again, we received the weekly residential crime report for the week of November 23, 2006. The most troubling is a Sexual Assault that happened on Saturday, November 18 at 6 p.m., when a man approached the victim from behind, put a gun to ther head and took her between two houses where he sexually assaulted her before fleeing in a westerly direction. Also of note, the Police is running a Toy Drive: they will take new, unwrapped toys for newborns-17 y.o. and even gifts for seniors until December 13.
We reproduce the report in its entirety below.
